Global Advocacy to Local Law – How My Journey Shapes My Legal Practice

About Zach Hunsinger

As the owner of a law firm with offices in both St. Louis and Chicago, I spend much of my time advising clients on business matters, estate planning, and navigating the challenges of divorce. But before I entered the courtroom or opened my practice, I traveled the world working with children and communities in need. This experience helped shape the person I am today—and, importantly, the attorney I strive to be for my clients.

My journey took me to South Africa and southern Mexico, where I worked alongside NGOs, the United Nations, and local law schools, focusing on initiatives that aimed to protect children’s rights and create opportunities for their futures. Those years on the ground, working with vulnerable populations, gave me a deep sense of empathy, perseverance, and perspective—qualities that now fuel my work as an attorney.

With NGOs and the United Nations

Many of the projects focused on children—providing them with access to education, supporting their families, and helping them escape cycles of poverty and abuse. My role often involved legal advocacy, research, and working closely with community leaders to develop sustainable solutions.

The work wasn’t easy. These were complex problems, and progress wasn’t always linear. But the experience taught me how to approach challenges with a calm and level head, always keeping the well-being of those I was serving in mind. This is the same mindset I bring to my law practice, whether I’m helping a client navigate the complexities of estate planning or working through the emotional challenges of a divorce.

In southern Mexico, my work continued at the United Nations and partnering with NGOs and local communities, where I witnessed firsthand the importance of justice and fairness. Working in regions where legal systems were often under-resourced and overburdened, I learned how important it is for people to have someone they can trust to fight for their rights. This is something I carry into my daily practice, where I prioritize the needs of my clients and advocate for their best interests, no matter how complex the case.

An Educator and Advocate

Alongside my work with the United Nations and NGOs, I also partnered with organizations and law schools in these regions to help train the next generation of advocates. This was a deeply rewarding experience, as I worked with students to develop their skills and prepare them to face the legal challenges their communities were facing.

Teaching not only strengthened my understanding of the law, but it also reinforced my belief in the importance of clear communication. I’ve carried this lesson with me into my practice today—making sure that my clients fully understand their legal options, so they can make informed decisions about their future.

How My Global Work Makes Me a Better Attorney

So, how does my time spent working in South Africa and Mexico help me serve my clients in St. Louis and Chicago? Here are a few ways my global experiences have made me a better attorney:

Empathy and Understanding: My work with vulnerable populations has given me a deep sense of empathy, especially when working with clients going through challenging times, such as divorce or family disputes. I approach each case with compassion, knowing that legal issues aren’t just about facts and figures—they’re about real people and their lives.

Problem-Solving Under Pressure: Navigating complex international legal systems taught me how to stay calm and focused under pressure, even when the stakes are high. Whether it’s a complex business matter or a sensitive estate issue, I take a methodical approach to problem-solving, ensuring that my clients feel supported throughout the process.

Commitment to Justice: Having worked in regions where access to justice was limited, I’m deeply committed to ensuring that my clients receive the best possible representation. I believe that everyone deserves an advocate who will fight for their rights, and I bring that same dedication to every case I take on.

Clear Communication: Just as I did while teaching law students, I prioritize clear and open communication with my clients. I believe in empowering my clients with knowledge, helping them understand their legal options so they can make decisions with confidence.

A Lawyer Who Understands People, Not Just Law

At the core of everything I do is a genuine desire to help people—whether that’s guiding a business owner through legal contracts, helping a family plan for the future, or supporting someone through a difficult divorce. My experiences in South Africa and Mexico shaped my values, and those values continue to guide my practice today.
